The Sun, the giver of life, is one of the most important points in the chart. It's position illuminates the house affairs, so that the native will try to fulfill his/her potential in that arena.
The principle ruler of those born during the day (diurnal birth/chart), it is the natural ruler of Leo, and he represents the vitality, general health, and life force; the conscious identity and ego, the public life, those in authority, and men in general. It is the “who” you are at the very core of your being. It is the True Self, without doubts, without fears, without boundaries. It also describes how you perceived and experienced your father or father-figure.
Note: While the Sun, Moon, and Ascendant are considered the three most important points of the chart, it is a common misconception to think there is nothing beyond one’s "Sun sign". Each planet and point (such as the Ascendant and Midheaven) is important in the delineation, as each represents another facet and modifier of the personality.
In the physical body, the Sun rules the heart, upper back, spine, wrists, and inherited physical stamina. Medically and nutritionally speaking, it rules vitamins A and D, iodine and magnesium. For further medical information, I refer the reader to Eileen Nauman's 'Medical Astrology'.
In the area of colors, gemstones, and metals, Leo is associated with orange, bright yellow, and gold; the ruby, sardonyx, and peridot; and the metal of gold.
The Sun is a typical yellow main sequence star - its mass, size, surface temperature and chemical composition lie roughly midway between the extremes exhibited by other stars. Even though it is the closest star to our planet, its light still takes 8.3 minutes to travel the roughly 93 million miles between the sun and the earth.
