I think back now to the lessons you taught me - the ones I was too busy to see. Life got in the way - work, raising a family - but you were always there for me. Not only were you my best friend, ever supportive, never judging, but you truly were a teacher. Those lessons, as your life, will not be forgotten, for you showed me that each day is a gift, to be cherished and lived to its fullest. Your species forgives us our faults and loves unconditionally and that gift is too precious to waste.
Watch over me 'Ris - and the new puppy Shiloh coming into this house. Don't let me forget to make each day count as life slips by far too quickly.
I thank you for all you gave me. I love you and I miss you.

and I have the sense to recognize that
I don't know how to let you go
every moment marked
with apparitions of your soul
I'm ever swiftly moving
trying to escape this desire
the yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
the yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
but I have the sense to recognize

that I don't know how
to let you go
I don't know how
to let you go

a glowing ember
burning hot
burning slow
deep within I'm shaken by the violence
of existing for only you

I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
and I have sense to recognize but
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go

OLD DOGS DO NOT DIE

We have a secret you and I,
That no one else shall know.
For who, but I can see you lie,
Each night, in fireglow?
And who but I can reach my hand
Before we go to bed,
And feel the living warmth of you
And touch your silken head?
And only I walk woodland paths,
and see ahead of me,
Your small form racing with the wind,
So young again, and free.
And only I can see you swim
In every brook I pass.
And when I call, no one but I
Can see the bending grass.
