It takes a special mix of weather conditions to spawn strong, damaging tornadoes. The series of supercell thunderstorms that spawned tornadoes from Oklahoma City to Wichita (May 3, 1999) came from a classic combination of conditions.

The diagram below shows conditions as they existed before the tornadoes hit Oklahoma and Kansas.
